平安夜指12月24日晚，是聖誕夜的意思，英語叫ChristmasEve(聖誕前夕，聖誕前夜)，平安夜也用來表示聖誕節前一天。巧得很，和中國民間的“掃塵節”一樣(夏曆12月24日，在全國大部分地區的家庭裏都要掃塵，“塵”和“陳”諧音，“掃塵”因而有“除舊”的意思)，在舊時的歐洲，平安夜也是掃塵的日子。
平安夜這個習俗漸漸流傳進中國，聖誕節的前一天，被稱爲平安夜。平安夜還沒到，一種叫做“平安果”的禮物，開始在人們手中悄然傳遞。不過，平安夜送平安果，這個習俗據說是中國纔有的。

平安夜微信公衆號文章三：平安夜的習俗
1、互贈蘋果
在中國人們也會在平安夜的時候相互贈送蘋果，蘋果的“蘋”，與平安的“平”，同音，因此，在平安夜吃蘋果也就寓意着“平安”的意思。
2、平安夜也被視爲短日
在英國，平安夜如在工作日，有時會被銀行及貿易公司視爲短日(下午休息)。
3、天主教的聖誕季節在平安夜開始
天主教的聖誕季節在平安夜開始。除非當日是星期日。守夜的聚會據說是在12月24日早上。然而，在午夜前參加聖誕節的聚會是不被允許的。
4、基督徒會在平安夜參與子夜彌撒或聚會
傳統上不少基督徒會在平安夜參與子夜彌撒或聚會，通常在世界各地的教堂內舉行，以表示聖誕日的'開始。一些教會則會在晚上較早時間舉行燭光崇拜，通常會有耶穌降生故事的話劇表演，亦會享用大餐，一般會有火雞或火腿作爲主菜。德國的傳統菜色則有燒鯉魚。
5、舉辦一個別開生面的化妝舞會
通宵達旦地慶祝聖誕夜是一個幸福、祥和、狂歡的平安夜、團圓夜。
6、與家人團聚
千千萬萬的歐美人風塵僕僕地趕回家中團聚。聖誕之夜必不可少的節目是party或聚會。大多數歐美家庭成員團聚在家中，共進豐盛的晚餐，然後圍坐在熊熊燃燒的火爐旁，彈琴唱歌，共敘天倫之樂。
7、把一條條色彩繽紛的襪子掛在牀頭
據說平安夜的晚上，聖誕節老公公會駕着馴鹿雪橇滿載着禮物準備送點這一年來表現很好的小朋友，他會悄悄地從煙囪爬進屋內，禮物塞在掛在牀頭的襪子裏。所以孩子總會把一條條色彩繽紛的襪子掛在牀頭，並在襪子旁邊放杯熱牛奶給勞苦功高的聖誕老人解渴，並送份大禮給自己。
8、互相交換禮物、報佳音
平安夜，當晚，全家人會團聚在客廳中，圍繞在聖誕樹旁唱聖誕歌曲，互相交換禮物，彼此分享一年來生活中的喜怒哀樂，表達內心的祝福及愛。在這天晚上都會看到一羣可愛的小男生或小女生，手拿詩歌彈着吉他，一家一家的唱着詩歌報佳音。
